#StopTheShame

What if we treated people with cancer or parkinson’s the way we treat addicts?

That’s the question First Call is asking with this eye opening campaign to #StopTheShame and start a discussion about addiction. The hope is to help people struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction and their families to feel less ashamed over something they cannot always control. Addiction isn’t a choice.

“People die behind shame all the time and in the last 15 years there’s been substantial research about the fact that substance abuse disorders are brain disorders and that drugs and alcohol change people’s brain chemistry in a way that contributes to the fact that it’s a chronic and progressive disease that needs to be treated.” Susan Whitmore, president and CEO of First Call
